Timeline:    August 2020 to November 2020, Term Project at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology

Objective:   The objective of our project stems from the profound societal shifts brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, which highlighted the unpredictable nature of our world and prompted significant lifestyle adaptations. Recognizing this period as an opportunity for positive change, we aim to facilitate lifestyle improvements by prioritizing health and nutrition. At Plantern, our goal is to empower users by providing them with the best possible experience, characterized by efficiency and sustainability. We envision a future where everyone thrives on a healthy planet, cultivating their own vegetables and contributing to a sustainable lifestyle.

Approach:   As a diverse team encompassing service design, public space design, and product design, we embarked on our project by delving into the needs and aspirations of our target audience. Through extensive research, we discovered a growing trend of people prioritizing their health but facing challenges in discerning the quality of what they consumed. Many desired to cultivate their own produce at home but lacked the knowledge, time, and space to do so effectively. It was during this exploration that we were introduced to hydroponics by one of our tutors, sparking our further research into its potential application.

Key Insights

  1. Concerns about health and food safety drove a desire for healthier eating habits, but uncertainty about the quality of store-bought produce, particularly due to pesticides and fertilisers, hindered efforts.

  2. Aspirations for gardening were common, but many lacked the knowledge and resources to start, especially in urban areas like Bengaluru and Mumbai where apartment living limited space, with some lacking even a balcony.

  3. Time constraints from busy work schedules deterred many from traditional gardening methods, compounded by concerns about the mess involved.

  4. Hydroponics emerged as an appealing alternative, offering a solution to space constraints and minimising mess, making it attractive to urban dwellers despite being relatively new and untried.
